While transportation is one of the most valuable services today, owning and operating a bus involves a risk threshold. There are many classifications for buses, and they can be for-hire or not-for-hire. Here is a handy one-pager to help you identify some of the different classes.

Examples of For-Hire:

Party Buses: Buses where the interior has been modified to accommodate a party atmosphere with decorative lighting, music and large video screens. These buses generally book groups ahead of time and do not pick up passengers along a route. Examples are bachelor/bachelorette parties, wedding parties, bar hopping, etc.

Charter Buses: These usually have a large seating capacity and are often used for carrying passengers on either long or short trips. They can also be converted to motor coaches with bunks and hired by entertainers for touring.

Sightseeing Buses: These are usually local radius and used for sightseeing trips around town (celebrity homes, famous venues, etc.)

Intercity Buses: Buses that follow a predetermined route and charge a fee per passenger.

Examples of Not-For-Hire:

Entertainer Buses: Usually large buses that have had the original seating removed and have bunks; owned by an entertainer to carry their band members on tour.

Church Buses: Used for transporting passengers to and from church, and church related activities.

School Buses: Used for transporting students to and from school, and school related activities. This includes both public and private schools.

Day Care Buses: Used for transporting children to and from a day care center. These buses are owned by the day care.

Boy & Girl Scout Buses: These buses are used for taking scouts on camping trips and other scout related activities.

Employee Transportation (Not-For-Hire): Used to transport a company’s employees to and from work. This must be incidental and not generate revenue.
